A series of stoppages at seven Emergency Departments around the country has been called off for this morning.

It's after talks between the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation and the representatives from the Health Service Executive last night.

The announcement to cancel today's strike came just after 11 o'clock last night, at the end of all-day talks between the HSE and INMO at the Workplace Relations Commission.

A set of proposals were agreed last night centring on overcrowding in EDs and the national Escalation Policy.

Other proposals dealt with recruitment and retention, including how incremental credit and pay for student nurses would be handled.

The INMO says its members will now consider the proposals, with consultation and balloting to be carried out in the next two to three weeks.

The union also said the strike is only deferred pending the outcome of that ballot and plans for further action on the 12th and 26th of January remain in place.
